Girls-Only Basketball League FAQ
Q: What is the Girls-Only Basketball League?
A: This is a brand new, all-girls basketball league organized by the SAA, offering a supportive and empowering environment for girls to learn, compete, and grow in the sport.
Q: Can my daughter still play in the traditional co-ed league?
A: Yes! Girls are still welcome to play in the traditional co-ed league. However, if you'd like your daughter to play in both leagues, you must register for each one separately. Signing up for the Girls League does not automatically enroll her in the co-ed league.
Q: Can my daughter switch between the girls league and the co-ed league during the season?
A: Players must commit to their registered teams once the season begins. Switching between leagues mid-season is not allowed.
Q: I am not a resident of Saugerties, can my daughter still play?
A: Yes, non-residents of Saugerties are eligible to play but must pay a non-resident fee of $20. Although very rare, we will always give Saugerties residents priority over non-residents when a league hits capacity. We will issue a full refund league if that happens.
Q: How will teams be formed in the girls league?
A: Teams in the girls league will be created based on the number of girls who enroll. Team sizes, age groupings, and divisions may vary depending on registration numbers.
Q: What age groups are eligible for the girls league?
A: We are currently accepting Girls Ages 5-15
Q: Will the girls league have the same schedule as the co-ed league?
A: We are hoping to start this league in December. The schedule will be similar, but not identical, and we will do our best to ensure game days do not compete with each other.
Q: Will there be tryouts for the girls league?
A: No formal tryouts are planned at this time. All players who sign up will be placed on a team. We always aim to balance teams and skill levels to form a fun, competitive experience for all.
Q: Are there any differences in rules between the girls league and the co-ed league?
A: The game rules will be largely the same, but we may adjust certain elements (like ball size) based on age group or developmental needs. All changes will be communicated before the season starts.
Q: What happens if not enough girls sign up?
A: If registration numbers are low to form full teams in a particular age group, we will look to combine age groups or create smaller teams, such as a 3-on-3 league. We will keep the lines of communications open as things progress in this regard.
Q: Can boys join the girls league?
A: No. This league is specifically for girls to foster a space that encourages participation, confidence, and camaraderie in a female-focused environment.
Q: Are you looking for coaches or volunteers for the girls league?
A: Absolutely! We welcome parents, former players, and community members to help coach, ref, or assist. Volunteers can use the same sign up form as the player registration form and select the Volunteer option.
Q: Who can I contact if I have more questions?
A: We’re happy to help! Please reach out to Mike Melville if you have other questions. mmel11@aol.com
